The first type of selective pallet racks is called the "structural" design. This name is derived from the fact that the uprights and cross horizontal beams are bolted together. These racks are not as easy to install; however they are sturdier and can be stacked higher. In addition these racks are designed for more permanent installations in which the rack configuration will rarely be changed. Like the tear drop configuration the pallets rest on the cross horizontal beams. Pallets are typically stored one high and used for low density warehouse storage when using selective pallet racks.
The second type of selective pallet racks is easy to assemble and come in two basic configurations. The first is the tear drop or clip in configuration. The name "tear drop" is based on the fact that the holes on the upright columns are shaped like a tear drop. This tear drop shape allows the cross horizontal beams of the racks to be easily assembled by having their studs slip easily into the tear drops. Pallets are then placed on the cross horizontal beams for storage. The advantage of these tear drop selective pallet racks is their configuration can be quickly and easily changed to meet new requirements.
